According to ESPN Senior NFL Insider, Adam Schefter, ” A ban of the Push Tush play that the Philadelphia Eagles popularized did not receive enough votes at today’s league meeting in Minneapolis. The play remains alive. There will be more tush pushes this season.” Said Schefter on X.
According to Schefter, the final vote on the ban was 22-10. At least 24 votes were needed to ban it.
According to the NFL reporter, Tom Pelissero, the Green Bay Packers were behind the proposal to ban the tush push.
The number of votes is fitting considering the last time the Eagles played the Packers in January, the Birds won 22-10. The Birds will play the Packers again on November 10.
The tush push was expected to be banned over a dispute over aesthetics, integrity, and safety.
According to the Associated Press, “The tush push not only assigns a player to push the backside of the quarterback for extra power behind a tight nine-man line but sometimes involves a blocker on the end pivoting to try to pull the ball carrier past the marker.”
“It was controversial when the forward pass came out,” Lurie said at the last league meetings, as reported by the AP. “I think aestheticism is very subjective. I’ve never judged whether a play looks OK.”
In a post on X, the Eagles said two words in regard to the final vote. “Push On”. On their YouTube page, they posted a 26-minute video showing only Tush Push plays. GO BIRDS!
