Authorities said on March 8, 2021, 29-year-old Andrew Anania kidnapped an Uber driver in west suburban Darien. He showed the driver a gun and forced her to drive to Chicago and park in alleys where he sexually assaulted her before running away.
A similar incident happened two days later, as officials said Anania and another man – identified as Walter Moran – kidnapped another woman who was on her way to work in Cicero.
Anania pointed a gun at the woman and made her drive to Chicago, where Moran later exchanged gunfire with other people in the street. Anania and Moran eventually let the woman go, but drove off in her car, according to investigators.
Court records indicate Anania also pleaded guilty to another kidnapping and carjacking, this one on Feb. 27, 2021, in Chicago. During that incident, Anania reportedly got into a vehicle, claimed he had a gun and sexually assaulted the woman who was driving.
Authorities said the woman escaped when the car stopped at an intersection. Anania then drove off in the vehicle and crashed a short time later.
During all three incidents, Anania was awaiting trial in a separate federal gun case. He had been released on bond in that case after being granted pre-trial release during a court hearing.
On Tuesday, May 13, 2025, Anania was sentenced to 50 years in prison during a hearing in federal court in Chicago.
Moran, meanwhile, pleaded guilty to kidnapping and carjacking charges in 2024. In April 2025, a judge sentenced him to 15 years and eight months in federal prison.
