4 Louisiana tribes get federal money for affordable housing

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — Four Louisiana tribal communities were awarded a portion of a national award of $1.1 billion from the federal government for affordable housing.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) awarded $192 million in Indian Housing Block Grant funding for eligible southwestern tribes, including Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.

The money can be used for housing development, operations and modernization of existing housing, housing services for those eligible, crime prevention and safety and model activities.

“HUD has a strong partnership with Tribal nations across the Southwest, and I look forward to collaborating directly with Tribal leaders in Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas to expand housing opportunities and remove burdensome regulatory barriers that impede progress,” said HUD Secretary Scott Turner.

Award recipients in Louisiana:

• Chitimacha Tribe: $283,891
• Coushatta Tribe: $110,531
• Jena Band of Choctaw Indians: $110,531
• Tunica-Biloxi Tribe: $1,167,854
