Child assists in safe alligator removal in Natchitoches

NATCHITOCHES, La. — A Natchitoches family got a surprise visitor Monday when a small alligator was spotted near the steps of a home in the 100 block of Independence Drive.

According to the Natchitoches Parish Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded after a woman reported that she, her sister, and her 1-year-old grandson were exiting their home when her sister suddenly shouted, “Alligator! Alligator!” The animal then moved into the shade and crawled underneath a parked vehicle in the yard.

Two deputies arrived at the scene and located the alligator—estimated to be between three and four feet long—hiding beneath the vehicle. Although the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries was contacted, no agents were immediately available.

With safety in mind, deputies helped the homeowner move the vehicle, prompting the alligator to wander into the yard. As neighbors gathered to watch, 11-year-old Jeremiah, a local resident, offered assistance with a litter grabber tool he brought after receiving permission from his grandfather.

Using the grabber, deputies safely secured the animal. Jeremiah’s grandfather later stepped in to help complete the removal.

The alligator was safely transported and relocated to a nearby waterway.

“We commend the quick response of our deputies and the safe handling of the situation,” said Sheriff Stuart Wright. “We also want to recognize young Jeremiah for his initiative and helpfulness. It was a great example of community cooperation and calm action.”
