Broussard tells News 10 he and his family are planning to relocate due to constant flooding in their area.
“This is not our first time flooding, but it will be our last because we’re definitely not staying,” said Broussard. “This flooding has been a constant problem.”‘
Broussard says he and his family were awoken in the middle of the night on Thursday by water rushing into their house.
“I stayed up pretty late and it started raining,” said Broussard. “About two hours later after we went to sleep, my friend who was sleeping in the other room came in and swung the door open and said, ‘Paul the house is flooded.”‘
Due to the sitting water, Broussard and his loved ones are now staying with family members. He says their house took in nearly three feet of water.
“It was right up to my kneecap, so two and a half feet, something like that, and it came in I think it was in and out in three hours,” said Broussard.
According to Broussard, this is the sixth time their home was flooded since 2016. He says his family resides on Theresa Drive, an area known for its frequent flooding due to its low elevation.
“After the big flood of 2016 every subsequent rain that we got even if it was a big rain, even if the house didn’t flood it chips away, it’s stressful,” said Broussard. “Something’s really got to be done for houses on elevations like mine because you can’t live like this, it’s unsustainable.”
He says while he and his family are happy to be safe, they will have a difficult time getting back on their feet.
“People have to deal with this too often, so we need to make sure we keep the focus on trying to do what we can to make sure that people like us in situations like this don’t have to deal with this again,” said Broussard.
