OPD investigating Saturday fatal shooting near Lake Merritt

(KRON) – The Oakland Police Department is investigating a deadly shooting near Lake Merritt early Saturday morning, according to the department. 

At around 12:45 a.m., Oakland police officers responded to the 500 block of 18th Street due to a ShotSpotter activation. Police said arriving officers located evidence of a shooting but did not find a victim. 

Shortly after, OPD was informed that a shooting victim had arrived at a local hospital. The victim, according to police, was pronounced dead at the hospital. 

The identity of the victim is being withheld until their family is notified.
