Lakes & Land: A drought update for the Big Country

Lakes & Land: A drought update for the Big Country
BIG COUNTRY, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – While significant rainfall last week gave us a brief break from the dry conditions, the U.S. Drought Monitor update this week confirms just how much improvement was received.

Much of the region remains locked in moderate to severe drought. Thankfully, however, our northeastern countries were improved back to a dry risk. It’s always important to remind everyone that local burn bans should be observed and followed where applicable.

In addition to our land being dry, our lake levels tend to vary. According to the Water Data for Texas, our surrounding lake levels look like this:

  • Lake Sweetwater – 34.1% Full
  • Lake Abilene – 4.2% Full
  • Lake Brownwood – 96.1% Full
  • Lake Fort Phantom Hill – 63.5% Full
  • Lake Coleman – 96.4% Full

Unfortunately, the forecast shows no rain in sight over the next week. Temperatures are also expected to climb even higher, which could dry out the ground even further. Find ways to stay cool and hydrated, and here’s to wishful thinking about those April showers we all want and need!
