ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC)On Thursday, Hardin-Simmons University students and faculty took time out of their schedules to give back during the school’s biannual ‘Serve Like Simmons Day.’

HSU was present at the Salvation Army, the Abilene schools’ foster and homeless care services, and the food bank of West-Central Texas. The volunteer project was named in honor of James B. Simmons, reflecting his lifelong commitment to serving others. Volunteers performed various tasks, helping Abilene nonprofit organizations.

Volunteers spread out across the city, lending a hand at the Salvation Army, the Abilene Independent School District’s foster and homeless services, and the Food Bank of West Central Texas. The day of service honors James B. Simmons and his legacy of compassion and community service.

Students and staff spent the day tackling various tasks, all supporting Abilene’s nonprofits.

Freshman Taylor Koch and Ella Cothran said participating in the event was not only meaningful but something they’d encourage others to try.

“We just wanted to go out in the community and serve those around us that maybe are a little less fortunate, but just get out and show a love of Christ to others,” Koch said.

“It’s just really rewarding to go out and serve those around us. I would really encourage it to those that maybe didn’t get out and get to join us today, it’s just a great experience,” Cothran added.

Roughly 100 participants rolled up their sleeves and got to work, showing that the HSU spirit of service is alive and well.
