57-year-old Illinois man dies in high-speed Corvette crash on Route 173

HARVARD, Ill. (WTVO) — Police found a 57-year-old man dead in a classic Chevy Corvette which had overturned in a field along Route 173 on Saturday.

According to the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, authorities were called to Illinois Route 173 west of White Oaks Road, west of Chemung, around 3:03 p.m.

There, they found a heavily damaged 1984 Chevrolet Corvette resting on its roof.

The driver was the sole occupant of the car, and suffered fatal injuries in the crash.

Police said speed and reckless driving are believed to be factors in the crash. An investigation indicated that the driver was traveling eastbound on 173, passing vehicles at a high rate of speed when he left the roadway, went airborne, and rolled over.

The crash is still under investigation, police said.
