Slemco takes action after early morning thunderstorms

CARENCRO, La (KLFY) — Mary Laurent, Slemco Communication’s Coordinator spoke with News 10 after many people lost power because of the thunderstorm early Monday morning.

“The damage was widespread; it was a combination of wind and lightning. A lot of the individual outages are lightning because if you were awake this morning, you know what was popping,” she said.

The cleanup process began for many people as homes had piles of tree limbs outside their yards. Some homes were damaged from the heavy winds and other yards filled with debris of tree branches.

News 10 traveled along North Wilderness Trail and saw crews with Slemco working.

“Where the storm came through we had much less in the Vermillion Parish area. We do have some in Lafayette, St. Martin. We do have some in St. Landry and a lot of those are individual either poles or locations that are out. So we do have crews that are working those areas,” said Laurent.

News 10 was informed by nearby residents that they were without power, but it has since returned. Crews also worked to clear a tree that fell in the middle of the road bridge.

In regard to how long certain areas will be without power Laurent said, “What we’re going to be doing is restoring feeders first because it doesn’t do any good to work at individual locations until we have the power coming from the substation down through the feeders so it’s going to depend on different areas.”
