Lafayette businessman Lloyd ‘Red’ Lerille dies at 89

LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) — A prominent Lafayette business owner has died.

Lloyd “Red” Lerille, 89, business owner and award-winning body builder, passed away earlier today due to health complications after being in hospice for a month, sources said.

Lerille was best known as the owner of the Lafayette landmark, Red Lerille’s Health & Racquet Club. The gym has been serving the community since its opening in 1963. The club moved to its present location on Doucet Road in 1965.

The New Orleans native won numerous bodybuilding titles, including Mr. New Orleans in 1955, Mr. Armed Forces and Mr. Hawaii in 1958, Mr. Dixie in 1959, and AAU Mr. America which he won in 1960.
