February ends with above-average snow, below-average precipitation, 3 record lows

February ended up being above average in snowfall, but it was below average in total precipitation. In addition, last month had three consecutive days of record low temperatures.

At KTLO, Classic Hits and The Boot, the official reporting station for the National Weather Service in Mountain Home, Feb. 19 was the month’s lone day of measurable snowfall at 4 1/2 inches. The meltdown from the snowfall was not enough for February to reach its average of precipitation. The total for the previous month was 2.56 inches, and that’s 7/10 of an inch below February’s average of 3.26. The total precipitation for the first two months is 6.9 inches, which is .34 of an inch above the period’s average of 6.56 inches.

The snowfall that hit the area last month was followed by frigid temperatures. The low was -2 over the next two mornings. The previous record for Feb. 20 was 9 degrees set 10 years ago in 2015, and the mark for Feb. 21 was 6 in 1963. The lowest temperature recorded for Feb. 22 was 6 degrees, breaking the day’s previous mark of 9 in 1978.

The warmest temperature recorded last month was 78 degrees on Feb. 4. The average high for February was 48 degrees, and the average low was 26.9.
