What to do if you see a pothole on Indiana interstates

INDIANAPOLIS — A pothole on I-70 caused a major backup Monday night.

Indiana State Police say a semi hauling other semis hit a pothole on I-70 near mile marker 123, causing a serious crash that stalled traffic for hours. There were no injuries.

ISP reports the pothole was about ankle deep when standing in it. The Indiana Department of Transportation sent out a crew that night to patch the problem pothole.

“They did complete some patching and they were going to be back out there today to take a look in the daylight to address any further concerns when they could get a better look at the area,” said Natalie Garrett, the Strategic Communications Director with INDOT.

Potholes on the interstate are getting more and more common this time of year. Indiana weather has gone from snow last week to sunny and 50 degrees this week, a perfect opportunity for the freeze thaw cycle that creates potholes.

INDOT crews are working to keep up. Garrett said crews monitor the roadways and respond to reported potholes.

”There is some pothole patching taking place overnight, so definitely in play, even in active construction zone,” Garrett said.

FOX59/CBS4 reporter Eric Graves drove nearly 100 miles Tuesday on the interstates surrounding Indianapolis on the hunt for potholes. He spotted some on the on-ramp from Illinois Street in downtown Indy onto I-65, on I-465 West just past the Michigan Street exit and further down I-465 West as it begins to turn south.

Garrett said they try to respond to pothole requests as quickly as possible, but there are different factors they base their attention on.

”The location, the severity of what’s out there,” Garrett said. “It can be as quick as a few hours for something that is more major in nature, to a few days, even a week or two. Especially, if it’s something off the main line, maybe on the shoulder.”
