On Tuesday, more than 18 months after Melton’s death, Birmingham police announced 22-year-old Damien McDaniel, who is also a suspect in two mass shootings, is charged with capital murder in Melton’s killing.
“I was relieved to know that someone had been charged, however it is still a process. It drudged up a lot of emotions that I’ve had to deal with from the beginning of this journey that had kind of settled down a little bit and now they’ve been stirred up,” Malone said.
On July 12, 2023, firefighters Jamal Jones and Jordan Melton were shot inside Fire Station 9 in Norwood. Melton died from his injuries on July 17.
“I’m grateful to the Jefferson County District Attorney Danny Carr and his team and everyone they worked with. They notified me ahead of time of this announcement and that helped with the sting of the announcement,” she added.
Since Melton’s death, Malone has started the Jordan E. Melton Empowerment and Mentorship Society (J.E.M.S. Society). The non-profit works to empower youth to commit to a life of non-violence.
“I’m just asking that now people will allow my family to process this privately, so I can focus on the public part of this and that’s the advocation,” Malone said.
With the charges announced Tuesday, Damien McDaniel stands accused in the deaths of 14 people. Eight of the 14 killings are related to two separate mass shootings in Birmingham in 2024. The first mass shooting took place outside of a Birmingham nightclub on July 13 and left four people dead and 10 others wounded.
