1 dead after man hit by car in Delaware County

DELAWARE COUNTY, Ind. — A 60-year-old was pronounced dead after he was reportedly struck by a car on Tuesday in Delaware County.

According to a news release from the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a reported vehicle-versus-pedestrian crash in the 3700 block of North Nebo Road around 7:09 p.m. on Tuesday.

When deputies arrived, they found that a Nissan, driven by a 45-year-old Delaware County resident, was traveling northbound on North Nebo Road when it struck a pedestrian in the roadway. The release said the pedestrian was reportedly homeless and was walking on the road while pulling a utility cart.

The release said that the driver told deputies that he did not see the pedestrian until the moment of impact and no other vehicles were involved in the incident. An initial investigation showed the driver had reportedly consumed alcohol, but successfully completed field sobriety tests.

The pedestrian was transported to a local hospital. The release said that the man was pronounced dead around one hour after the crash.

The driver of the vehicle was released pending further investigation. According to the release, no criminal charges have yet been filed. The incident continues to be investigated by the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office’s crash team and criminal investigations division.
