Man charged in connection with deadly shooting of 2 Chicago charter school students in Loop

CHICAGO — Felony charges have been filed against a man accused in the fatal shooting of two Chicago high school students in the Loop last year.

Officers said 22-year-old Tommie Coleman, a Pullman resident, is facing a slew of felony charges in connection with the deadly shooting, including two counts of first-degree murder, one count of attempted first-degree murder, one count of aggravated discharge of a firearm from an occupied vehicle, and one count of unlawful use of a weapon by a felon.

Authorities also cited Coleman for having an unregistered weapon.

According to police, the deadly shooting unfolded near Madison Street and Wabash Avenue in the Loop just after noon on Jan. 26, 2024, when a dark-colored sedan and an SUV pulled up near the teens and masked gunmen opened fire.

The teens were both hit in the shooting and later died at the hospital.

They have since been identified as 16-year-old Robert Boston and 17-year-old Monterio Williams, both students at Innovations High School.

Coleman evaded police for over a year after the shooting, but authorities eventually caught up with him on Wednesday in the 5700 block of North Mason Avenue, in Jefferson Park, where he was taken into custody.

Officers have not provided details on if any other suspects have been identified in connection with the case.

On Sunday, exactly one year after the murders, loved ones of the teens gathered near the site where they were killed to offer an update on the search for those responsible and demand justice.
