SLIDELL, La. (WGNO) — It was battle between two of the top names in Slidell, Incumbent Mayor Bill Borchert and Chief of Police Randy Fandal, each with the same goal: to take the top seat in the city.

Prior to this race, Fandal spent more than 40 years working in law enforcement, six of which as chief.

He says his most recent role gives him the skills he needs to be successful as mayor.

“I’ve been leading people for the last 30 years. I’ve been leading people at the state level. I led the entire state police criminal controls for over statewide. I’ll continue my leadership and management style as mayor,” Fandal said.

Borchert says his role as mayor gives him a head-start against his opponent, but that his prior experience working at a limousine rental company CEO gives him even more of an advantage.

“I had to put together a budget, I had to put together a payroll. I had to deal with real world problems in the fact that if something happened to one of the cars or one of the drivers, I had to adapt and make the solutions happen to the problems that were occurring in real time,” Borchert said.

For some in the audience, the main topic they wanted to hear about was flooding mainly on Gause.

“That definitely needs to be fixed because those businesses when it rains don’t get the business that day,” Slidell resident Cheryl Devautte said.

Thankfully for them, both candidates agree that this is a top priority.

“We need smart drainage solutions and we need to get it done,” Fandal said.

“We’ve got $14.5 Million in federal and state grants to widen Bayou Patassat and increase the capacity from 4.5 million gallons of water to nearly 40 million gallons of water,” Borchert said.
