“I think a lot of Slidellians will apply for the job, and hopefully they’ll, you know, take those jobs. I think it’s great for Slidell because we need the money. The building is here. Let’s use it. Let’s begin business,” said Slidell resident Cindy Strecker.
“We’re set up for distribution. We’re set up for big business to come in and use our interstate access to grow their business here,” said Councilman Trey Brownfield.
Brownfield says the $40 million facility came to fruition under former Mayor Greg Cromer and Councilwoman Leslie Denham.
Now, almost four years later, Brownfield believes this facility will bring an economic boost to the Northshore.
“This is something that we need. We need industry. We need business. We need economic development. And huge investments like Amazon coming to this area is what is going to put Slidell on the map,” said Brownfield.
Slidell Mayor Bill Borchert got to see the facility before its opening. It features new interior walls, conveyor systems and electric charging stations that have been installed on the property.
Borchert says employees from another facility will come in to get the Slidell location started on the right foot.
“They assured me that they plan that on Aug. 20, the first package will be received and shipped from this facility here in Slidell,” said Borchert.
With 400 jobs available, Borchert believes most of the positions will be filled by those in the surrounding area.
“They’re going to bring a large portion of those employees over to open this and train local employees. They’ll have to have Picayune. They’ll have to have Pearl River. You know, I would imagine some will even come from as far as Amite or Ponchatoula,” said Borchert.
Local officials say they hope this facility will help market Slidell as a major distributing site.
