In total, the parish has received 13 grants equaling $605,600. This comes through the Louisiana Center for Safe Schools program created by the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness.
School board officials say the grants will allow for each school to receive up to $50,000 per school site to strengthen the schools ability to prevent, protect against and respond to threats of violence on campus.
“These grants are an important step in making sure every child in Jefferson Parish has a safe place to learn and grow. We are grateful for the state’s investment in our schools and for the recognition of the work we are doing to keep safety at the forefront. This support allows us to strengthen our schools today while building a stronger, more secure future for our entire community,” said Dr. James Gray, Superintendent, Jefferson Parish Schools.
Officials said the Louisiana Center for Safe Schools Grant Program reflects the priority on physical security enhancements in schools. The funds will be used to create secure entry vestibules.
The entry ways will be controlled-access points allowing visitors to be scanned before entering the main campus area adding an extra layer of security.
“By building secure entry vestibules, we are not only upgrading facilities but also creating peace of mind for students, staff, and families. Investing in safe and modern buildings is essential to supporting strong learning environments, and this funding helps us move our district forward in that commitment, “ said Patrick Jenkins, Chief Operations Officer, Jefferson Parish Schools.
Chief District Affairs Officer for Jefferson Parish, Dr. LaDinah Carter says school safety is one of their highest priorities.
“This investment represents more than just new construction; it is a clear commitment to the well-being of our students and staff across Jefferson Parish Schools,” said Carter.
