WESTWEGO, La. (WGNO) — A new mural is getting a lot of attention in Westwego. It is a giant painting of a 163-foot alligator along the levee.

The mural is painted along the levee off Sala Avenue and River Road in Westwego. But don’t worry this alligator doesn’t bite.

“Yeah, no doubt. This alligator is super approachable,” Joshua Wingerter,

artist said.

Wingerter knows this gator well because he created the mural in 4 days.

“We decided to create this as a landmark for people of the city to be excited about and for other people from out of the neighborhood to come visit,” Wingerter said.

Wingerter’s known for bringing people together through his art. He first became well-known for his graffiti art on boarded up windows in the French Quarter during the pandemic.

His new piece is proving to be challenging.

“It is really exciting to have a canvas so massive. The process is that we rolled out all the blue colors, and did all the background and letter work, and then the gator itself was all done with spray paint. We didn’t know exactly how to handle the scales, so I handled it like a sketch, drew the eye and then everything else,” he said.

Painting at an angle made it very difficult for Wingerter.

“I fell off twice. I hit the ground, my headphones fell off with my glasses going this way, and then cans going that way,” he said.

Nothing will keep him down, he’s already gearing up to paint his next project right next to the giant gator.

Wingerter will be painting shrimp boats on the locks where there used to be a canal and ships would come through.

“Hopefully this art will last the test of time,” he said.

Wingerter worked with the City of Westwego and the Levee Committee of the West Bank to get the “state’s largest painted gator” made.

As for now, the mural doesn’t have a name but the artist said that they are thinking of naming it after an old alligator that people know from the Westwego swamp tours.

The Joshua Wingerter Gallery is located at 401 Sala Avenue in Westwego.
