ST. JAMES PARISH, La. (WGNO) — A 36-year-old Convent man was sentenced to life in prison on Monday, Oct. 27, in the fatal shooting of his mother.

According to the 23rd Judicial District Attorney’s Office, on Jan. 7, 2021, St. James Parish Sheriff’s deputies responded to a shooting at a house in Convent. They said they learned that Carlos Washington

shot two people inside the house and barricaded himself inside with his 6-year-old son. While deputies were attempting to get inside, Washington reportedly fired his weapon, forcing the deputies to retreat and engage in a stand-off.

Washington eventually came out with his son, armed with a handgun. He was taken into custody, and deputies entered the house. Inside they found Anita Jacobs, Washington’s mother, dead from a gunshot wound to her head. Washington’s stepfather was found with a non-lethal gunshot wound. He was treated at a local hospital.

Washington was then booked into the St. James Parish Jail.

Washington was given the following sentences, which are to run concurrently:

  • Second-degree murder: Life in prison without benefit of parole, probation or suspension of sentence.
  • Attempted second-degree murder: 50 years without benefit of parole, probation or suspension of sentence.
  • Possession of a firearm by a convicted felon: 20 years without benefit of parole, probation or suspension of sentence.
  • Second-degree cruelty to a juvenile: 40 years without benefit of parole, probation or suspension of sentence.
