Officials encourage families and outdoor enthusiasts to discuss water dangers before heading out and to always let someone know where they are going and when they plan to return. Conservation officers also recommend boating or swimming with a buddy, staying away from flooded or fast-moving waterways, and closely supervising children near the water.
Wearing a properly fitted life jacket remains one of the most important safety precautions. Indiana Conservation Officers advise using U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets that are in good condition and appropriate for the wearer’s size. Inflatable life jackets are also available and offer greater comfort and flexibility for boating, fishing, and paddling activities.
Boaters are urged to assess water levels and conditions before launching and to reduce speed in unfamiliar areas. Monitoring speed and water conditions not only helps prevent accidents but can also reduce shoreline erosion.
Officials are also stressing the importance of sober boating. Alcohol consumption can impair balance, coordination, judgment, and reaction time, with sun exposure, wind, and wave action intensifying those effects. Operating a motorboat or personal watercraft while intoxicated is illegal in Indiana. State law defines intoxication as having a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08% or greater.
Indiana Conservation Officers encourage residents to practice safe habits on the water all summer long to help prevent tragedies and ensure everyone enjoys the season safely.
