ELKHART COUNTY, IND. (WOWO) A gas leak prompted evacuations Wednesday morning in an Elkhart County subdivision after a construction crew accidentally struck a gas main, according to dispatch officials.
Emergency crews responded to the incident in the Pheasant Ridge subdivision west of Bristol.
Gas main struck during underground work
Elkhart County Dispatch told WSBT 22 that an underground boring crew accidentally hit a gas main in the subdivision early Wednesday morning.
The leak was reported to authorities shortly after 7:30 a.m.
Homes evacuated as precaution
According to officials, firefighters with the Bristol Fire Department evacuated five homes in the 53000 block of Monticola Lane as a safety precaution while crews worked to address the leak.
Emergency personnel established a response area around the damaged gas line while utility crews began repair operations.
No injuries reported
Authorities said no injuries have been reported in connection with the incident.
Officials have not released information on how long evacuations may remain in place or when residents will be allowed to return to their homes.
Repairs and investigation continue
Utility and emergency crews remained on scene Wednesday morning working to secure the damaged gas main and restore normal conditions in the neighborhood.
Officials are continuing to monitor the area as repair work proceeds.
