BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — May 6, 2026
Bloomington police arrested an 18-year-old Bloomington man Tuesday in connection with a shooting near Five Guys on Kirkwood Avenue during Little 500 weekend, but investigators now believe a second shooting happened shortly afterward near Chipotle.
The Bloomingtonian caught the second shooting on video:
Lewis James May, 18, was arrested May 5, 2026, after police located him leaving a residence in the 1600 block of South Dorchester Drive, according to a Bloomington Police Department news release. Officers watched the residence and saw May leave in a vehicle about 5:15 p.m. The vehicle later stopped at a downtown restaurant, where May was arrested without incident, police said.
May was booked into the Monroe County Jail on two counts of battery by means of a deadly weapon, Level 5 felonies; criminal recklessness, a Level 5 felony; and pointing a firearm at another person, a Level 6 felony. May’s date of birth is Feb. 4, 2008, according to police.
The arrest stems from a shooting near Five Guys, 425 E. Kirkwood Ave., where police say May was seen on video waving a handgun toward a crowd during a fight between two females. Police said the video shows May confronting one of the females and firing a round into the sidewalk near the entrance to Five Guys. That shooting injured at least two females, according to police.
However, police said Wednesday they now believe a second shooting occurred shortly afterward near Chipotle, 420 E. Kirkwood Ave. Investigators said it is not yet known whether the two shootings are connected, but the second shooting appears to be a separate incident and remains under investigation.
The shooting near Chipotle is believed to have injured at least three females, according to police.
The incident began about 12:25 a.m. April 26, when Bloomington police officers were stationed in the 400 block of East Kirkwood Avenue monitoring a large crowd that had gathered in the street. Officers heard what they believed were multiple gunshots, and the crowd began scattering. Officers immediately converged on the area and located multiple wounded people, police said.
Investigators reviewed cellphone video submitted to police and surveillance video from nearby businesses. Police said footage confirmed that a fight broke out between two females near Five Guys. One of the females, a 20-year-old Indiana University student, later told detectives she got into a physical altercation with multiple people she did not know after someone threw water on her, according to police.
During that fight, police said, May was seen on video waving a handgun toward the crowd and firing into the sidewalk. The crowd then scattered, and people ran from the area.
On April 30, Bloomington police released still images of the man seen on video waving the handgun and firing a round into the sidewalk. Within an hour, multiple callers identified the man as May, according to police.
Investigators later obtained a search warrant for May’s residence. During the search, police said they found and confiscated a Taurus 9mm handgun and a backpack resembling a shark.
Police said investigators continue to seek video from the area near Chipotle as they work to determine what happened in the second shooting and whether it is connected to the earlier shooting near Five Guys.
Anyone with video or information is asked to contact Detective Chris Scott at 812-339-4477.
Under Indiana law, criminal charges are accusations, and a defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
