50 Years Ago

  • The Northampton Zoning Board of Appeals last night granted a special permit to the trustees of The Cooley Dickinson Hospital to allow construction of an $860,000 underground cancer radiation treatment center. Zoning board members granted the permit immediately after a public hearing at which no objections to the project were voiced.
  • Norman S. Smith, work study and career education coordinator for the Northampton schools, this week was given the Massachusetts School Counselors Association award for counseling leadership this year. The award was made at the organization’s annual meeting in Hyannis. Smith is a vice president of the group.

25 Years Ago

  • The only race in Monday’s election in Williamsburg is for a Board of Selectmen seat. Two candidates, Rick Barnard and Eric Cerreta, both with backgrounds in business and management, are seeking the post held by Bertil Liander, who is not seeking re-election after two terms.
  • The 20th annual Pride March took place in Northampton Saturday. Organizers say more than 6,000 gay and lesbian people and their supporters participated. A number of politicians, including U.S. Rep. Barney Frank, addressed a gathering at Veterans Field following the parade through downtown.

10 Years Ago

  • Northampton’s 35th annual Pride celebration, organized by the non-profit Noho Pride Inc., kicks off Friday with a pre-Pride dance party with DJ Nicki Nell in the Union Station grand ballroom and continues into Saturday with a parade, drag performances and celebratory speakers.
  • An unusually high number of voters at the annual Hadley town meeting on Thursday voted down a tiny house bylaw. Residents said during the meeting that tiny houses would not fit in with the agricultural and rural nature of the town.
