Studio Technologies Boosts Jacksonville State Division I Broadcasts With Dante-Based Comms Backbone

Jacksonville State University has overhauled its athletics broadcast communications with a Dante-based system from Studio Technologies, improving reliability, clarity and production efficiency across football, men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball, soccer, baseball and softball.

The deployment centers on Studio Technologies’ Model 5422A Dante Audio Engine, Model 348 Intercom Station, Model 216A Announcer’s Consoles, Model 372A Intercom Beltpacks and Model 381 On-Air Beltpacks. Working with the university’s IT team, Jax State built a dedicated virtual LAN and wired its athletics venues to support the digital audio-over-IP workflow. Many events air on ESPN platforms, including ESPN+, with select games on CBS.

“When I arrived at Jax State, one of my primary objectives was to upgrade our broadcast infrastructure so we could truly operate like a Division I program,” Bill “Bubba” Bussey, assistant athletic director and director of broadcasting, said. “The biggest issue we faced was communication. It was an antiquated analog system on copper that simply didn’t work consistently.”

After seeing Studio Technologies equipment used on nationally televised productions, Bussey worked with the company to design a new communications backbone. “It just works,” Bussey said. “With Studio Technologies, our directors can communicate clearly and consistently. That’s been a game-changer.”

The upgrade has been especially impactful for student crews learning live production, Bussey said, allowing teams to focus on quality and creativity rather than troubleshooting. Jax State continues to expand the system, adding a second Model 381 On-Air Beltpack to enable in-game communication with baseball managers from the dugout.

Founded in 1978, Studio Technologies provides video, audio and fiber-optic solutions for professional broadcast and production.
