The AI and Bot Squeeze: The Silent Crisis Decimating Publisher Revenue

Publishers are dealing with a traffic crisis they can see. And one they can’t.

The visible one is Google. Search referral traffic has dropped 33 percent globally and 38 percent in the US, according to Chartbeat data from 2,500 publisher sites. Google Discover, which used to be a reliable growth channel, is down 21 percent. AI search is answering questions without sending people anywhere. That traffic isn’t coming back.

The invisible crisis is what’s replacing those human visitors. Machines.

Bots, crawlers, scrapers, AI training systems. In 2020, machine traffic was about 1 percent of what hit publisher servers. By the end of 2025, it’s expected to pass 50 percent. By 2030, some projections put it near 90 percent.

Publishers are watching their human audiences shrink while their servers work harder than ever. The math doesn’t work.

These two problems feed each other

AI search products need training data. They get it by crawling publisher content. The better these systems get at synthesizing information, the less they need to send users to the source. Publishers are providing the raw material for products that eliminate the need to visit publishers.

Meanwhile, the traffic that does show up increasingly can’t be monetized. Bots don’t click ads. They don’t subscribe. They don’t convert. They just consume server resources and bandwidth while generating zero revenue.

For publishers already running on thin margins, serving non-human visitors is pure cost.

The Reuters Institute’s 2026 report didn’t sugarcoat it: confidence in the prospects for journalism is at an all-time low.

Most analytics can’t even tell the difference

Here’s the uncomfortable part. Most publisher measurement tools weren’t built for a world where half the traffic isn’t real.

Standard metrics (pageviews, uniques, time on site) don’t distinguish between a human reader and a language model scraping content for training data. This creates problems all the way down the advertising chain.

CPM buys assume impressions are served to humans. Programmatic auctions run on traffic signals that may be increasingly synthetic. Brand safety tools flag content problems but not audience composition problems.

Some publishers are finding out that campaigns they thought performed well were actually serving ads to machines. The scale of this is hard to pin down because the measurement infrastructure to catch it barely exists.

The industry is flying blind into a traffic mix that breaks its core assumptions.

Two strategies are emerging

Faced with traffic they can’t monetize through traditional ads, publishers are trying two things at once.

First: licensing. New frameworks like Real Simple Licensing from the RSL Collective aim to help publishers get paid when AI products use their content. Instead of fighting the crawlers, publishers can try to capture value from the machine traffic hitting their servers.

This is early and mostly unproven. Licensing deals have gone to a handful of big publishers with enough leverage to negotiate. For mid-sized and smaller outlets, the path to meaningful licensing revenue is still unclear.

Second: doubling down on human engagement. If machine traffic is worthless and search traffic is disappearing, the value of direct relationships with real people goes up.

Publishers investing in newsletters, apps, subscriptions, and logged-in experiences are building something bots can’t fake. A subscriber who opens an email is verifiably human. A logged-in reader on a native app is authenticated attention. These audiences command premium ad rates precisely because their humanity isn’t in question.

Commerce integrations that monetize within the content (rather than depending on traffic to somewhere else) are another approach. If the transaction happens where the reader already is, it matters less how they got there.

Someone needs to fix the plumbing

Platforms scraping publisher content need economic arrangements that don’t hollow out the open web. In the meantime, publishers face a choice. They can adapt to a world where traffic numbers are unreliable and human attention is scarce. Or they can keep optimizing for metrics that don’t mean what they used to.

The publishers getting through this moment are treating human engagement as a premium asset worth cultivating. Better content, direct relationships, monetization that doesn’t depend on search algorithms or traffic reports telling the truth.

The bots will keep coming. The question is whether publishers can build businesses that don’t need them.
