Bloomington police are investigating after multiple people were injured in a shooting early Sunday on Kirkwood Avenue, police said.
The shooting happened about 12:25 a.m. April 26, 2026, while Bloomington Police Department officers were stationed in the 400 block of East Kirkwood Avenue monitoring a large crowd that had gathered in the street, according to a news release from the department.
Police said officers heard what they believed were multiple gunshots, and the crowd began scattering. Officers immediately converged on the area and found multiple wounded people.
There were muffled sounding gunshots, and the crowd on Kirkwood began to scatter. Police found a woman with a gunshot wound in front of Five Guys.
Police said it was not immediately clear how many of the injured people suffered direct gunshot wounds or whether some injuries were caused by bullet fragments.
At the time of the release, five injured people had been transported from downtown Bloomington to local hospitals by ambulance, one person was taken by a Bloomington police squad car, and two others were taken by personal vehicles for treatment. Another person was taken by ambulance from a gas station in the 200 block of West 17th Street with injuries believed to be connected to the Kirkwood Avenue shooting, police said.
The Indiana University Police Department, Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and Indiana State Police assisted at the scene. Police said remotely piloted aerial vehicles were used to document the scene, and an Indiana State Police helicopter also responded to assist in the investigation.
No suspects were in custody Sunday morning, police said.

Police said the information is preliminary and may change as the investigation continues.
