International Falls hockey coach accused of stealing nearly K from booster club

An International Falls girls hockey coach is accused of stealing nearly $10,000 from a local booster club following a fundraising event.

According to charging documents, Bryan Wayne Kershaw, 47, committed felony theft by directing a fundraising company to issue a $9,864.25 check to him rather than to the booster club that organized the hockey fundraiser.

Two booster club board members contacted police a few weeks ago after several attempts to recover the money. The board members said the money raised during a November 2025 fundraiser had not been deposited into the club’s account.

Investigators say both board members reportedly sent text messages and made phone calls to Kershaw multiple times since November, 2025. Kershaw allegedly promised to return the money, but court documents said no funds were repaid.

Police then contacted the owner of the fundraising company, who provided text messages showing Kershaw instructing the company to make the check out to him personally because it was how “the Treasurer wants it.”

Kershaw is charged with intentionally exercising control over another person’s property while showing indifference to the owner’s rights. He could face up to 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine.
