Newark has kicked off Newark Film Works, a new program offering free instruction and support for residents who want to work in film and TV. The New Jersey Economic Development Authority awarded $750,000 to fund this effort.

Two instruction tracks will run over two years. Set Production Assistant Fundamentals and Set Grip and Electric Intensive courses provide practical skills, exposure to the industry, wraparound services, and help finding work.

Several city organizations came together to create Newark Film Works. Invest Newark, which manages the city’s economic development, secured the grant. The Newark Office of Film and Television, responsible for production permits, will coordinate activities.

Yvonne M. Shirley and Nicole L. Thompson will teach the courses. Shirley runs Express Newark’s Community Media Center and creates independent films. Thompson started the Newark Film School.

“Bringing an idea all the way through development to realize our city as an entertainment epicenter has been years in the making and will soon crystalize as our workforce and state-of-the-art facilities rise up together,” said Mayor Ras Baraka, according to National Today.

Organizers designed the program to prepare locals for positions at the coming Lionsgate Newark studio. Marcus Randolph, President and Chief Executive Officer of Invest Newark, explained that readying residents for the growing film industry matters for widespread economic growth.

“Newark is home to a vibrant and motivated population of residents who bring a wide range of interest and experience in the film and television industry,” said Desireé Hadley, Director of the Newark Office of Film and Television. “Through Newark Film Works, we now have the ability to formally tap into this talent pool and provide a clear, accessible pathway into the industry.”

Those who enroll will gain skills, credentials, and contacts needed for union and non-union productions. Free events at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center will connect participants with others in the film and media community.

Applications are open. An in-person information session happens on April 25. Classes start in June at Express Newark.
