Early Voting Opens April 15 in Shelby County Primary

Lakeland residents will have the opportunity to cast their ballots early for the May 5 State and County Primary, with early voting scheduled from April 15 through April 30. The extended voting period provides voters with added flexibility ahead of Election Day, as multiple races across the county appear on the ballot.

While the primary election is countywide, several contests hold particular significance for Lakeland residents. Among them is the Shelby County Commission District 3 race, which represents both Lakeland and Bartlett. Incumbent Mick Wright currently holds the seat, but is not seeking reelection. Lakeland resident Ryan Ramkhelawan is running as the Democratic nominee for the Shelby County Commission seat and current Lakeland Vice Mayor Michele Dial is the Republican candidate. Both candidates are unopposed in their respective primaries, meaning the outcome of this race will ultimately be decided in the August general election. The District 3 seat plays a key role in shaping county decisions related to infrastructure, funding, and long-term development, making it especially relevant to Lakeland’s future.

In addition to local representation, the countywide race for mayor is drawing significant attention. With current Mayor Lee Harris unable to seek re-election due to term limits, several candidates have entered the race, including J.B. Smiley Jr., Melvin Burgess, and Mickell Lowery. The contest is expected to be one of the most closely watched races on the ballot.

As early voting approaches, Lakeland residents are encouraged to participate in the primary process, while keeping in mind that the most decisive vote for their direct county representation will take place later this summer during the general election.
