The update, which will be featured at the NAB Show in Las Vegas, April 18-22, allows news publishers and social media platforms to monetize short-form and social content without the bundle size penalties usually associated with ad-enabled players.
The player uses a flexible Load Control API, giving developers granular control over how streaming ad content is loaded. Both main content and ads can be preloaded in the background, enabling transitions between segments with no buffering delay.
“Player Web X brings together high-performance playback and advertising support in a single, lightweight package,” James Varndell, Bitmovin senior director of product management, said. “For news publishers and social media platforms managing a mix of landscape and portrait content, that complete capability comes in a lightweight bundle that keeps load times fast.”
Bitmovin said the architecture delivers a 30% faster startup time than open-source alternatives. The player also includes a proprietary adaptive bitrate (ABR) algorithm, known as WISH, built into its modular structure.
According to the company, the fully featured bundle is 26.63% smaller than comparable alternatives, maintaining a minimal footprint to keep page loads fast and seeking smooth.
The Package API allows development teams to build custom packages to extend or replace functionality without modifying the player’s source code.
