Cyberattack Targets Poland’s Nuclear Research Center, Investigation Underway

Poland’s National Centre for Nuclear Research (NCBJ) has confirmed that its IT infrastructure was recently targeted in a cyberattack.

The attempted intrusion was successfully detected and blocked by the institute’s cybersecurity systems, preventing any disruption to its operations or research activities.

The incident was disclosed on March 12, 2026, when the research institute issued a statement explaining that the attack had been quickly contained.

According to officials, automated security mechanisms and the rapid response of internal security teams helped prevent the attackers from gaining access to critical systems.

Attack Detected and Neutralized

The cyberattack targeted the institute’s internal IT infrastructure. However, NCBJ confirmed that the organization’s defensive measures worked as designed.

Security monitoring systems detected suspicious activity early, allowing teams to isolate and block the attempted intrusion before it could affect sensitive networks.

The institute stated that the integrity of its systems remained intact throughout the event. All cybersecurity procedures were executed according to established protocols, ensuring that the threat was neutralized quickly.

Prof. Jakub Kupecki, Director of the National Centre for Nuclear Research, emphasized that operational safety was never at risk during the incident.

He confirmed that all safety mechanisms functioned correctly and the institution’s research and operational processes continued without interruption.

MARIA Nuclear Reactor Operating Safely

Officials also reassured the public that the MARIA research reactor, one of Poland’s most important nuclear research facilities, continues to operate safely and at full capacity.

According to the institute, the attempted attack did not impact any production, operational, or scientific activities.

Reactor operations remained stable, and safety monitoring systems reported normal conditions throughout the incident.

The MARIA reactor is used for nuclear research, isotope production, and scientific experiments. Due to its strategic importance, it is protected by multiple layers of cybersecurity and physical security controls.

Following the detection of the attack, the National Centre for Nuclear Research immediately coordinated with several government and cybersecurity agencies.

These include:

  • NASK–PIB (Poland’s national research institute responsible for cybersecurity and networks)
  • The Ministry of Digital Affairs
  • Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Affairs Krzysztof Gawkowski
  • The Ministry of Energy, led by Minister Miłosz Motyka

Authorities are working together to analyze the attempted breach and strengthen the protection of Poland’s critical infrastructure.

Security teams and government agencies continue to monitor the situation closely to identify the origin and methods used in the attempted attack.

While officials have not disclosed details about the threat actors or techniques involved, the incident highlights the increasing cybersecurity risks targeting critical infrastructure sectors worldwide.

The National Centre for Nuclear Research stated that it remains fully prepared to respond to future cyber threats.

The institute emphasized that its systems are operating normally and that the country’s nuclear research infrastructure remains secure.
