Tableland.xyz is the online home of Tableland, a permissionless, serverless relational database network designed for web3 applications. According to its documentation, Tableland helps developers store and query structured data, such as information organized in rows and columns, using SQL (a widely used language for working with databases). Table creation and data updates rely on blockchain-based access control, meaning permissions are enforced through onchain accounts. Tables are created on supported blockchains and owned by those accounts, while read queries are handled offchain through the Tableland gateway, allowing applications to retrieve data without requiring a blockchain transaction. In April 2023, Tableland announced an $8M Series A funding round led by CoinFund, with participation from Multicoin Capital, Blueyard, and A Capital.¹

Managing structured data in web3 applications

Within the web3 ecosystem, Tableland is positioned as a way to manage structured, relational data without relying on centralized databases. The network separates data access and permissions from data storage by anchoring write operations onchain and serving read operations offchain. This design allows applications to work with mutable data while maintaining blockchain-based rules for ownership and access. Use cases described in Tableland’s public materials include NFT metadata, gaming data such as leaderboards, and shared datasets for decentralized organizations.

The team behind Tableland

The Tableland network was initiated by the Textile team, now operating as Recall Labs, a company focused on building decentralized data infrastructure. One of Tableland’s co-founders, Andrew Hill, currently serves as CEO of Recall Labs. As shared on his LinkedIn profile, Andrew has held technical and leadership roles across data and mapping platforms, including serving as Chief Science Officer at CARTO, a Geographic Information System (GIS) platform. His background also includes academic appointments, such as an adjunct role at NYU Tisch School of the Arts.
