St. Paul police responded to a home on the 100 block of Oneida Street around 10 p.m. on Feb. 2 on a report of gunshots and someone running from a parked vehicle. According to a criminal complaint, investigators found a Dodge Durango parked on Oneida Street with its driver’s door open and several bullet holes through the front driver’s side window.

David Lee Turner III, 23, was found unresponsive in the driver’s seat with bullet wounds in his back. Despite first aid, he died of his injuries.

An autopsy showed he had been shot eight times in the face, neck, chest and right arm.

Witnesses said they saw a man who appeared to be holding a gun running from the Durango.

According to court documents, surveillance video showed the Durango parking on Oneida Street. After about 20 minutes, a blue SUV parked nearby. A man was seen getting out of the blue SUV and into the Durango.

After the shooting, a man wearing a dark jacket and blue hoodie was seen running from the back seat of the Durango, and a man wearing a brown shirt got out of the passenger seat, “hopped around” and then got into the blue SUV, court documents state.

The man in the jacket appeared to rummage around the Durango and take items before leaving.

Investigators found that Turner had been texting someone about meeting up prior to the shooting. He also briefly called the number twice moments beforehand.

Surveillance video showed the blue SUV driving toward Regions Hospital after the shooting. According to court documents, Green showed up with gunshot wounds to his abdomen and leg. As of Monday, he was still hospitalized in serious but stable condition.

Hospital security footage showed that Green was wearing a brown hoodie when he was dropped off at the hospital.

Green’s phone pinged in the area of the shooting around the time it occurred, and the phone number that Turner was texting was traced to Baker.

Green spoke with investigators at the hospital and claimed he was drunk and high when he was shot and didn’t remember the exact circumstances. According to court documents, he denied having a cell phone and said he didn’t shoot anyone or even have a gun. Green also denied knowing Turner.

Baker was arrested the next day. He called his girlfriend from jail and asked her to throw a bag of his clothing away, court documents state. At Baker’s girlfriend’s home, officers found a handgun and ammunition.

In an interview with investigators, Baker admitted that he and Green had been buying marijuana from Turner for the past few weeks. On the night of the murder, he said Green got into the Durango and he heard gunfire. He added that Green admitted to shooting Turner, according to court documents.

Green told Baker that Turner had shot him, so he fired back.

Baker said the handgun found at his girlfriend’s home was Green’s and was the gun that was used to shoot Turner.

Court documents state that Green and Baker previously texted each other about robbing people, including on the day of the shooting.

Baker later told investigators he didn’t know that Green planned to rob Turner during the drug deal, but added that the two had both recently lost a lot of money gambling. Later, he changed his story and said that he knew Green planned to rob Turner, but that he didn’t know Green was going to kill him.

Court documents note that Baker was previously convicted of first-degree assault and two counts of illegal firearm possession.
