A man was sentenced to 33 years in prison for the 2022 murder of 48-year-old Tina McCombs.

Maurice Smith, 42, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in late November. An additional count of second-degree murder and one count of first-degree burglary were dismissed at sentencing, and Smith was given credit for nearly 1,500 days already served. A separate illegal firearm possession case was also dismissed as part of the plea deal.
McCombs was pronounced deceased after being found with two stab wounds to her chest. Her boyfriend told police that he was in the living room and McCombs was in the bedroom when an intruder kicked open the apartment door and stabbed her, court documents state.
He also said the suspect had red dreadlocks and a tattoo of a six-pointed star on his face.
In an interview with police, Smith admitted that he knew McCombs and that he had gone to her apartment “to kill her.”
