It marks the first time the Estonian national institution has outsourced preservation work to a provider outside of the country.
The initiative was driven by the rapid degradation of magnetic tape, a format that was dominant for television and business use between 1960 and the early 2000s. Media experts have long warned that content holders face a critical window to migrate these formats before the physical media becomes unplayable or the necessary playback equipment disappears entirely.
“As Estonia’s central memory institution, we needed a partner we could trust completely for our first major video digitization project,” said Eva Näripea, director of the film archive for the National Archives of Estonia. “Memnon gave us total confidence that our valuable assets were in the right hands.”
The EU-funded project was completed on a strict eight-month schedule. Memnon use climate-controlled transport to move the sensitive materials and specialized technology to ensure the quality of the digital migration.
Heidi Shakespeare, CEO of Memnon, said the project provided a “window into the country’s rich history” and required a high level of care due to the historical importance of the recordings.
The digitized content is now publicly accessible online, a move NAE says reinforces its position as a leading cultural and historical institution in the Nordic and Baltic regions.
The successful migration highlights a growing trend among national archives and media organizations to seek specialist expertise as they race against time to preserve legacy audiovisual collections before they are lost to physical decay.
