Bloomington, Ind. — January 6, 2026

A proposal to rename a stretch of State Road 45 near Indiana University’s Assembly Hall for late men’s basketball coach Bob Knight advanced this week after clearing a House committee.

State Rep. Peggy Mayfield, R-Martinsville, presented House Concurrent Resolution 4 to the House Roads and Transportation Committee, calling on the Indiana Department of Transportation to rename the portion of SR 45 between College Avenue and Fee Lane in Bloomington as “Bob Knight Memorial Way.”

“Coach Knight’s name is synonymous with Indiana basketball,” Mayfield said in a statement, adding that a road designation near Assembly Hall would “ensure his legacy will continue to inspire generations of students, fans and Hoosiers.”

According to Mayfield’s office, the resolution passed out of committee unanimously and will move to the full House for consideration. If approved by the General Assembly, INDOT could proceed with the designation and signage.

Knight coached IU from 1971 to 2000, leading the Hoosiers to three NCAA championships, including an undefeated season in 1975-76, and 11 Big Ten titles. He later coached at Texas Tech and finished with 902 career wins.
