New Google Feature Lets Users Change Their @gmail.com Address

Google is gradually rolling out a new feature that allows users to change their existing @gmail.com email address without creating a brand-new account.

For years, Google Account holders were unable to alter their primary Gmail username after sign-up. If you wanted a new name, you had to create a separate account and manually transfer your data.

This new update simplifies the process, letting you replace your current Gmail address with a new one while keeping all your data intact.

According to Google’s support documentation, when you change your email address, your old address does not disappear. Instead, the system automatically converts your previous address into an “alias.”

This is a critical safety net for users. It means that even after you switch to a new handle, you will continue to receive emails sent to your old address.

Furthermore, all your saved data including Google Photos, Drive files, and past emails remains unaffected. You can also sign in to Google services (like YouTube or Maps) using either the old or the new email address.

While this feature offers flexibility, Google has implemented specific guardrails.

• Frequency Limit: Once you create a new Gmail address, you cannot create another new one for the next 12 months.
• Reversibility: You can switch back to your old email address at any time.
• Availability: The feature is rolling out gradually. If you do not see the option yet, it may not be available for your account immediately.

How to Check Eligibility
To see if you can change your address, follow these steps:

1. Go to myaccount.google.com on your computer.
2. Select Personal Information from the left-hand menu.
3. Click on Google Account email.
4. Look for a new setting labeled “Change your Google Account email address.”

If the option appears, you can proceed by entering a new username. The system will check if the requested address is available before confirming the change.

Google advises users to be cautious before making the switch. Changing your primary email may cause temporary issues with third-party sites that use “Sign in with Google.”

Additionally, users on Chromebooks should review specific troubleshooting steps before proceeding, as the change could affect device sign-in.

Google recommends backing up important data such as contacts and photos before making significant account changes, similar to the precautions one would take when moving to a new device.
