Court documents state that on Saturday at 2:38 a.m., the Becker County Sheriff’s Office was called to a house at the 700th block of Ash Avenue West in Frazee, where a 911 caller stated someone had fired a gun.
When authorities arrived, they found Bryson Andrew May, a 19-year-old man who had been shot multiple times in his chest and possibly in the head. May was taken to the hospital, but later died of injuries.
Three other people who had been inside the home told authorities two people had forced their way into the house after May opened the door, which the suspects had been knocking on.
One of the witnesses, a girl, said she recognized one of the suspects as Campbell.
Campbell reportedly “pistol-whipped” the girl after forcing his way into her room and began searching for items. He also threatened to shoot another girl who was in the room.
According to the girl, Campbell was still upstairs when they heard a gunshot, and Campbell went downstairs. Another witness said after the first gunshot, she heard Campbell run downstairs, followed by two more gunshots. The two men then left the house in a black SUV.
The SUV was found by a deputy in Otter Tail County, with two boys and two adults, one of whom was Campbell.
One of the juveniles told authorities he drove the three others to the house in Frazee after Campbell and a boy, identified in court records as KNM, said a man named “Gage” owed them money, charging documents state.
The juvenile said KNM and Campbell went inside the house to collect the money and vape cartridges “Gage” owed them, and he and the other adult remained in the vehicle. While waiting, he heard gunshots, got scared, and was planning to leave before the two came running out of the house and got into the car.
While driving, Campbell told the juvenile to pull over. Campbell and KNM then placed something in a mailbox before driving away. After obtaining a search warrant, court documents said investigators found two pistols inside the mailbox.
According to court documents, Campbell reportedly told authorities he had been “blackout drunk,” and could not remember why he had been in Frazee, but did have some recollection of events.
He told authorities he remembered being upstairs when he heard the first gunshot. He said after running down stairs, he only recalled firing his gun once, claiming he had aimed for May’s leg to make sure he wouldn’t chase after them.
Campbell told authorities he doesn’t remember shooting May a second time, but said it was possible he did.
Campbell made his first court appearance on the murder charge Tuesday and is being held on $2 million conditional bail. His next hearing is set for Feb. 9.
