Retired police officer killed while helping stuck vehicle in Elk River

A retired police officer was hit by a car and killed while trying to help a stuck vehicle in Elk River earlier this week.

Elk River police say that on Tuesday at around 6:25 a.m., authorities responded to a pedestrian crash on Main Street Northwest and Highway 169.

An ambulance brought the pedestrian, 53-year-old Clayton Connolly, to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police said that Connolly had stopped to help someone whose car was stuck due to icy road conditions. While Connolly was helping, both he and the stuck car were hit by a vehicle exiting northbound Highway 169 and turning onto eastbound Main Street.

The two cars sustained damage, but the two drivers did not require medical help, the police department said.

Elk River police add that Connolly was a retired Brooklyn Park police officer who served the community for 20 years.
