A man is in custody after he allegedly started a fire early Monday morning at the Fridley nursing home where he lives, police say.
According to the Fridley Department of Public Safety, crews responded to a report of a fire around 5 a.m. at The Estates at Fridley on the 5700 block of East River Road. Smoke was coming from one of the residents’ rooms, and part of the care facility was evacuated.
Police were told one of the nursing home residents had started the fire and was not on the premises, Fridley Public Safety said. Officers from several agencies set a perimeter around the neighborhood, and the suspected arsonist was arrested nearby.
One injured resident was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive.
The fire remains under investigation.
