East metro residents may soon have another option for getting into downtown St. Paul.

On Tuesday, Ramsey County, the Met Council and the cities of St. Paul and Maplewood announced the METRO Bronze Line — a reimagined bus rapid transit (BRT) project that builds on the former Purple Line.

County officials said there is a renewed focus on community, safety, accessibility and improved transit connections for the east side to the rest of the county.

Ramsey County Commissioner Mai Chong Xiong added that the Bronze Line will be 100% locally funded, with the county covering “about 90% of the cost.”

“This redesign demonstrates what’s possible when agencies listen, adapt, and respond,” said Maplewood Mayor Marylee Abrams. “Our community asked for smarter design, less disruption, and better bus service. That’s what the Bronze Line delivers.”

The Bronze Line will span about 10 miles and include 22 stations, five miles of bus lanes and two new bridges.

All BRT stations will feature near-level platforms, real-time arrival information, lighting, security cameras and seasonal shelter amenities, according to the county. It will also utilize all-door boarding and off-board fare collection.

“We are proud to partner with Ramsey County and Metro Transit to bring the Bronze Line to life,” said St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter. “This transformative investment in East Side transit will open doors for our residents — connecting them to jobs, schools, and essential services. We’re making it possible for more people to live full, connected lives through alternate transportation options.”

What’s next

Ramsey County and the Met Council began a new round of public outreach, including meetings with community members, business owners and transit riders.

On Dec. 5 and 11, the Community and Business Advisory Committee and the Corridor Management Committee will consider project recommendations. The recommendations will later be presented to the St. Paul and Maplewood city councils and the Ramsey County Board of Commissioners.
