LSUS baseball panel discussion to celebrate historic perfect season

NATCHITOCHES (KTAL/KMSS) — The LSU Shreveport Pilots baseball team made history by completing the first-ever undefeated season in the sport.

Since the team’s 59-9 national championship season, they have been honored in virtually every conceivable way.

Another milestone arrives on November 18, when players and coaches will share insights into their incredible year in a special, free panel discussion at the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame & Northwest Louisiana History Museum, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

LSUS head coach Brad Neffendorf said, “There’s no better place than the state of Louisiana for college baseball, and the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame recognizes only the best in a state that has such a rich sports history.”

“We’re excited to have an exhibit in the museum and to share what a special season our guys put together.”

Assistant coach Jordan Schwellenbach, first baseman Austin Gomm, shortstop Jose Sallorin, and pitchers David Hankins and Brock Lucas will join Neffendorf for the panel.

Schwellenbach was named NAIA Assistant Coach of the Year by the American Baseball Coaches Association.

Gomm was named to the All-Red River Athletic Conference First Team thanks to his team-high 12 home runs while batting .348 with his 64 RBIs.

Lucas went 2-0 with four saves and a 2.25 ERA in 16 innings pitched.

Hankins compiled a 5-0 record with a 2.70 ERA and 29 strikeouts in 23 1/3 innings.

Sallorin was a member of the all-conference golden glove team while batting .335 with 56 RBIs and 54 runs scored.

The Pilots only trailed in 18 of the 59 wins.

Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame Chairman Doug Ireland said, “Fans will get to hear directly from the people who made history. This is a rare chance to celebrate a truly once-in-a-lifetime achievement in Louisiana sports.”

The museum will also debut an exhibit featuring team memorabilia, behind-the-scenes stories, and championship artifacts.
