2 West Virginians identified in fatal crash on I-70 Friday night, passenger transported with life threatening injuries

WASHINGTON COUNTY, Pa. (WTRF) — The two people killed in a head-on crash on Interstate 70 Friday evening have been identified as 59-year-old Donna Havens of Wheeling and 69-year-old William Magers of Glen Dale, West Virginia.

Just after 5 p.m., state troopers were dispatched to the area near mile marker 5, close to the Claysville exit. Investigators said a Hyundai sedan traveling eastbound crossed the grass median and entered the westbound lanes, colliding head-on with a Ford SUV.

Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene. A woman who was a passenger in the SUV was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. A juvenile was a passenger in the back seat and was, remarkably, unharmed.

Before the crash, police had received reports of an eastbound vehicle driving erratically on I-70. Investigators are working to determine if it was the same car involved in the collision.

The crash closed both directions of I-70 for several hours before reopening later that night.

State police continue to investigate with assistance from collision reconstruction and forensic units. Investigators are reviewing possible contributing factors, including speed, weather, and time of day.
