“We have been proud to serve the Jackson Triangle neighborhood over the years, and this decision was not made lightly,” the company said in a statement. “With our lease term ending, we have carefully considered our options and decided to shift our strategy.”
The store’s employees will transfer to other stores in the region, per the company’s collective bargaining agreements, Safeway said. The Hayward grocery store at 22280 Foothill Blvd. will remain open.
“We remain dedicated to serving the Hayward community at our nearby location off Foothill Blvd., which has the same offerings as our Jackson St. location, plus a Starbucks kiosk and pharmacy,” Safeway said.
The closure is the latest in a series of Safeway closures in the Bay Area.
