‘We have to come together’: Residents weigh in on redevelopment of Rockford Memorial Hospital

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — As Rockford grapples with the future of its west side, a long-shuttered hospital has become the focal point of a community-driven redevelopment effort.

The former Rockford Memorial Hospital, closed by Mercyhealth in July, may soon be reborn as a neighborhood hub under the stewardship of the Unity in the Community Development Center, led by Pastor Melvin Brown.

The Unity in the Community Development Center, soon to be led by Kingdom Authority Church Pastor Melvin Brown, plans to transform the former hospital into a community hub on Rockford’s west side. A town hall meeting was held to gather input from local residents about their hopes for the facility.

“At the end of the day, it’s more about collaboration and not competition. We have to come together,” said a board member of the Unity in the Community Development Center.

Kingdom Authority Church Pastor Melvin Brown emphasized the importance of community input, stating, “Part of his vision was to know what the community wanted. And for us to be sensitive to what the community wants.”

During the town hall, residents expressed concerns about the future of Rockford’s west side. One resident voiced fears about the community “literally dying out.”

Board members assured attendees that the facility could address many community issues if there is cooperation rather than conflict.

City leaders, including Mayor Tom McNamara, have raised concerns about the financial viability of the project.

“We already got contracts that will take care of the monthly expenses and everything else that’s already in progress. Not because the city wants to reach out to help us. Not because the state representatives want to reach out to help us, but because me and my wife stepped out on faith in God,” Brown said.

The sale of the former hospital is expected to be finalized by the end of November.

As the sale of the hospital building approaches completion, community leaders and residents alike are hopeful that the redevelopment will bring positive change to Rockford’s west side.
