Erie County Coroner investigating inmate death at SCI Albion

Erie, Pa (WJET/WFXP)– An inmate at State Correctional Institute Albion is dead after the prison said he was found unresponsive in his cell Wednesday night.

SCI Albion said 25-year-old Andy Ortiz was found unresponsive in his cell and life-saving aid was given by prison staff and later by EMS. He was later declared dead at 12:18 am.

Erie County Coroner Lyell Cook said Ortiz was found in his bunk and no cause of death has been determined at this time. An autopsy is scheduled for Friday morning.

SCI Albion said Ortiz was convicted of unlawful contact with a minor in Philadelphia County, with court documents showing he was sentenced to 5-15 years in prison and pleaded guilty to several other felony sex-related offenses.
