U.S. Congressional candidate Kat Abughazaleh indicted after Broadview protest

COOK COUNTY, Ill. — U.S. House Democratic candidate Kat Abughazaleh has been charged in a federal indictment along with five others related to the Broadview ICE facility.

Abughazaleh is facing a federal charge of to impede a U.S. law enforcement officer following protesting at the ICE facility in Broadview on Sept. 26.

Abughazaleh, Michael Rabbitt, Andre Martin, Catherine Sharp, Brian Straw and Joselyn Walsh are accused by federal authorities of surrounding an ICE agent’s vehicle and damaging the vehicle.

Federal prosecutors claim “PIG” was etched into the vehicle.

She is also accused of bracing her body against the vehicle to hinder it.

Abughazaleh, 26 and a former journalist, announced a campaign in March for Illinois’ 9th district which has long been held by Jan Schakowsky. Schakowsky announced this year that she is not seeking re-election.

Abughazaleh responded to the indictment on social media, calling it a political prosecution.

“This is a political prosecution and a gross attempt to silence dissent, a right protected under the First Amendment,” Abughazaleh said on social media. “This case is a major push by the Trump administration to criminalize protest and punish anyone who speaks out against them.”

The indictment was filed Oct. 23 and was recently unsealed.
