Cold temps leading to valley inversions

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Happy Tuesday, Utah! It’ll be a chilly start to the day with valleys bottoming out in the upper 20s to low 30s, bringing a chance of freezing temperatures from the Wasatch Front to Cedar City.

Mountain valleys and the Wasatch Back will have lows in the upper teens to low 20s, so bundle up on your way out! A Freeze Warning will be in effect until 9 am for Capitol Reef/Vicinity where temperatures should fall to about 30°, and the eastern Uinta Basin where we could see temps drop to 20°.

Temperatures will run below average in the north with daytime highs in the upper 40s to low 50s, while the south stays a little warmer topping out in the mid 50s to low 60s. The St. George area will climb into the low and mid 70s.

With the cold temperatures in the north and stable conditions, we could see an inversion develop on the Wasatch Front Tuesday and Wednesday making for hazy conditions near the surface. Say hello to inversion season! Apart from some valley haze we’re looking at mostly sunny skies across the state.

A weak system will skim us to the north on Thursday, but it shouldn’t bring any precipitation, just an increase in cloud coverage for northern Utah on Wednesday and Thursday. Breezy conditions should allow for the inversion layer to mix out by Thursday. The back half of the workweek brings temperatures in the upper 50s to low 60s, which is right around where we should be this time of year. Meanwhile, St. George will stay in the mid to upper 70s through the workweek.

The good news is, Halloween weather will be cooperative! This Friday will be clear and cool with no precipitation expected and highs in the upper 50s to low 60s for most of the state.

We’ll keep you posted on the latest developments in our 4Warn Weather forecast both on-air and online, we are Good4Utah!
